Diamondback General Manager Patrick Wilkinson and his daughter, Rachel, are here to demonstrate how best to play No. 2, a par five that presents its fair share of challenge.
Hello, I’m Patrick Wilkinson. I’m here today with my daughter, Rachel Wilkinson, and we’re at Diamondback Golf Course standing on Hole No. 2. It’s a par five, plays 591 yards from all the way back. But today, we’re going to play from 555 yards, which is from the standard white tees out here. It’s a great hole, slight dogleg to the right. Got a little water down there after your tee shot, you’ve got to be careful from.
With Diamondback Hole No. 2, your ideal tee shot is to hit it down the center, maybe to the left of center, and keep it in that area. The fairway slopes hard from the right to left, so you get a nice level line. The trouble is all to the right off your tee shot. So down the middle, middle left, and you’ll be in perfect position.
To set up our second shot, we’ve landed in a nice spot in the fairway, about 225, 230 yards off the tee box. So, on this hole, that leaves us approximately 320 yards from the green, so we need to hit another layup shot. So what we do, it’s a wide-open shot, the only thing we’ve got to worry about is a little pond in front of us. But we want to hit toward that 150-yard marker, which is located in the center of the fairway. We hit it to the 150 marker, maybe to 130, and we’ll have a nice easy eight or nine iron into the green.
The No. 2 green at Diamondback is probably the smallest green we have on the whole golf course. It’s relatively flat with not a whole lot of undulation at all. It’s got one bunker on the left side that guards anything that you might hook or pull into it. But other than that, it’s a relatively small green, a good hole to make birdies on. Not a whole lot of break. So take advantage of it when you play.
